Technology in the Making

Koch Hall brings computer science and electrical and computer engineering together in a building where shared spaces and hands-on labs keep ideas moving.

How far can an NC State education take you? For Christina Koch, the answer is around the moon. NC State renamed the former Engineering Building II in her honor in August 2026, recognizing a three-time Wolfpack graduate whose path led from electrical engineering and physics to NASA and the Artemis II mission. 

The Department of Computer Science occupies the building’s east wing, with dedicated teaching and research spaces. Koch Hall also houses the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), bringing the study of software, hardware and electronics into the same building.

In the ECE MakerSpaces, electrical and computer engineering students have access to equipment for electronics testing, soldering and 3D printing, along with wood and metalworking tools. These facilities support the practical work behind a prototype: building components, assembling electronics and testing a design. Students use the spaces for coursework and senior design projects, as well as personal projects that let them explore their own interests.

Room to Grow

A 2020 expansion brought the building to 228,296 square feet.
