Lake Raleigh and Surrounding Woods

A Serene Lakeside Retreat on Campus

Lake Raleigh, situated on NC State’s Centennial Campus, is more than just water. It’s a 75-acre reservoir framed by 96 acres of protected woodland that offers a calm retreat in the middle of campus life. The woods surrounding the lake, known as Lake Raleigh Woods, are also recognized as one of the 10 Hallowed Places on NC State’s campus, honoring their significance as a space for reflection, connection and Wolfpack tradition.

With a fishing pier, non-motorized boat launch, walking and mountain-bike trails and scenic spots to picnic, paddleboard or simply watch the sunset, the lake draws both the Wolfpack and the Raleigh community alike. Whether you’re going for a jog on the greenway, casting for largemouth bass or catfish or just soaking in nature between classes, Lake Raleigh blends recreation, wellness and natural beauty.

The trails, including portions of the Walnut Creek Trail, feature secluded woodlands and open green space that make Lake Raleigh Woods a cherished outdoor space on Centennial. For many, it’s a go-to for fresh air, relaxation and gathering with friends. The area is open from dawn until dusk and has multiple public access points, meaning it’s always ready to welcome visitors.
