The Largest Green Space on Main Campus

The Court of North Carolina is the largest green space on Main Campus and one of NC State’s 10 Hallowed Places. You’ll see students relaxing in the court on sunny days between classes eating lunch or studying for their next exam.

Over the years the court has taken on many lives: as a pasture for cows in 1889, a location for classrooms and professors’ offices, an open space, a place for students to gather and a scenic view. The court was previously known as the 1911 Field.

Today, on snow days, it’s home to an epic campus-wide snowball fight. Professors utilize this space during nice weather as an outdoor classroom for that day’s lecture. The Court of North Carolina is lined with some of the oldest buildings on campus.
