Fountain Dining Hall
Fountain Dining Hall is one of NC State’s largest all-you-can-eat dining halls, complete with diverse daily entrees, salad and deli stations and student-favorite features.
3D Tour Description
Fountain Dining Hall is the largest dining facility on NC State’s campus, located on the west side of Main Campus near the residence halls. The building is designed to handle a high volume of students, featuring a sprawling, single-level layout centered around a “food court” style serving area.
The main entrance faces the brick walkway near Lee and Bragaw Halls. Upon entering, visitors navigate a wide lobby area that houses the check-in kiosks. The flooring is a high-durability, non-slip tile that continues throughout the high-traffic serving areas.
The center of the hall is a large, open-concept serving zone. It is organized into several distinct “islands” or stations, each specializing in different cuisines. The stations—such as the grill, the deli, the international station, and the salad bar—are arranged in a large circuit. There is significant space between these islands to allow for multi-directional foot traffic. The serving counters are at a consistent, accessible height. Each station features overhead signage and digital menus. To help with navigation, the flooring in front of the counters is often open and clear, though queues usually form in straight lines perpendicular to the stations.
The Beverage and Utensil Stations are centrally located and separate from the food lines. They feature grouped dispensers for ice, water and sodas, as well as bins for silverware and napkins.
Fountain is divided into several large seating wings that branch off from the central serving area. This layout helps break up the massive space into more manageable sections. The largest seating area features a mix of long communal tables and smaller square tables. The furniture is heavy and stable, usually made of wood or metal with hard-surface seating. Some sections of the dining hall are slightly raised or separated by low walls and glass partitions. One entire side of the dining hall features floor-to-ceiling windows that look out toward the campus greenery, providing significant natural light during breakfast and lunch hours.
Located near the exit, the dish return features a moving conveyor belt.
