The Brickyard
NC State’s Gathering Place
The Brickyard, officially known as University Plaza and one of NC State’s 10 Hallowed Places, has been a central gathering place at NC State since it was completed in 1968. Designed by noted landscape architect Richard C. Bell, the space is paved with more than 500,000 red and white bricks laid in a distinctive geometric pattern.
From the start, the Brickyard has served as both a social and academic hub, hosting everything from student organization fairs and political rallies to impromptu frisbee games and study sessions. Its unique design and location between D.H. Hill Jr. Library and key classroom buildings have made it one of the most recognizable and beloved landmarks on campus.
